The following lubrication systems are typical dry thin oil lubrication systems on small single-engine aircraft. The oil system and components are systems for lubricating a 225 horsepower (hp) six-cylinder horizontally opposed air-cooled engine. In a typical dry sump pressure lubrication system, a mechanical pump supplies oil to the bearings of the entire engine under pressure. Oil flows into the inlet or suction side of the oil pump through the suction pipe and the pipe connected to the external tank, which is located higher than the bottom of the oil pan. This prevents sediment that has fallen into the sump from being drawn into the pump.
The fuel tank outlet is higher than the pump inlet, so gravity can help flow into the pump. An engine-driven positive displacement gear pump presses the oil into a full-flow filter. The oil passes through the filter under normal conditions, or if the filter becomes clogged, the filter bypass valve will open as previously described. In the bypass position, the oil is not filtered. The regulating (release) valve senses when the system pressure is reached and opens to bypass oil to the inlet side of the oil pump.
